Meet an Associate

Michelle Reboita, ICTP Associate and Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Universidade Federal de Itajubá, Brazil, discusses her connection to ICTP.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Michelle Reboita, from Brazil. I did my PhD in meteorology, and now, I work with climate change and climate modeling. My PhD was the first work in Brazil where we applied the RegCM model from ICTP to study synoptic-scale (~ 1000 km horizontally) cyclones over the South Atlantic Ocean. I was so happy for this initial contact, and I'm now involved with people in the ESP section.

How long have you been in the Associates program?

Since 2013! I had my first associateship as a junior, and afterwards, as a regular.

What are you doing right now?

Right now, we’re studying cyclones using high-resolution models, and I'm working with the group to understand if these models perform better than previous versions. So, I normally come here not only to attend schools or conferences, but to share data and develop some papers.

Do you work closely with ESP when you’re back in Brazil?

Yes, I feel like this. I have a strong interaction with the ESP group at ICTP because we research together. We have contact every day, even when I'm in Brazil.

What did you do at the Associate’s 60th anniversary conference?

I was very excited at the conference because I could meet people I didn't know, exchange some knowledge and create relationships, even with other Brazilians. Carolina Brito, for example, is from southern Brazil. She’s in CMSP, and I don't know many people here from different fields. I didn't know her before, and we got to know each other here at ICTP during the conference, which was great!

Describe yourself in under 5 words.

I never give up!
